Dipo and the Politics of Culture in Ghana

Genre: Social Science
ISBN: 978 9988 626 55 X

How should modern Ghanaians relate to ‘culture’? This is a hotly debated issue in Ghana, where ‘culture’ is not only positively regarded as ‘heritage,’ but also has strong connotations with traditional practices, ‘backwardness’ and ‘paganism.’ Drawing on extensive fieldwork, missionary and colonial archives, the author shows how contemporary performance of dipo relates to and is shaped by Krobo encounters with missionary Christianity, colonial intervention and modern nationalism.
